Euroconsult estimates that around 6,500 commercial aircraft worldwide (approximately 20% of the global fleet in operation) provided connectivity services to passengers at the end of 2016, an increase of 24% y-o-y, primarily driven by Ku-band based solutions.

Nearly 50% of all connected commercial aircraft now rely on VSAT solutions, compared to only 22% in 2012. We expect this share to grow further to nearly 70% as of 2020 with the fast deployment of HTS capacity, in both Ku-band and Ka-band, expected to be a game-changer for the IFC market. HTS systems will not only tremendously increase data speeds to planes but will do so at a significantly lower cost, thereby further driving the adoption of IFC services. While Ka-band penetration was still limited in 2016, major change is on the cards in the coming years, driven by Inmarsat’s Global Xpress, Viasat and Thales Inflyt.

That being said, ATG solutions in commercial aviation still benefit from growth potential, mostly as a result of the expected commercial launch of Inmarsat’s European Aviation Network (EAN) in H2 2017 and Gogo’s Next Gen ATG network in the US in 2018.
